Formula brings racing back to PWA tour

"The PWA is pleased to announce the addition of the 2002 PWA Pan Am Cup in Puerto Rico, as the first PWA Formula racing World Cup for 2002. This Grand Prix event at the beginning of August, will herald the return of racing to the PWA circuit, making the PWA the single most recognized arena sanctioned by the ISAF, for the 3 main windsurfing disciplines, Racing, Wave Performance and Freestyle. Phil McGain PWA Chairman: "We have been working hard to secure a stronger tour this year and with racing returning to the PWA tour in the form of Formula, we are able to deliver what the sailors, industry and media have been asking for."

Like the other two racings in Canada and Sylt later this year, Puerto Rico will see no women racing, all 3 race events are men only.

every girl's a winner today... (photo: Michael Hitzler)

PWA-tour kickoff in Gran Canaria

Registration-Day: It was quite sure we are going to be at least the 8 girls that are necessary to do the first competition of the year in Vargas, Gran Canaria. The forecast was pretty bad for the whole week, small hopes for the weekend. Strong wind, but from the wrong direction.

Report by Claudia Rankel, AUT 33

Day 1: In the morning at the first skippers meeting the rumours about moving the competition to the north were not confirmed. The forecast for this day became true. There was wind in the south in Maspalomas, with headhigh waves. We went for training although the wind came from the wrong direction - starboard-tack. Coming back the rumours started again that the competition will be moved to the north, to San Andres… usually a big wave-spot for surfing. Since the wind was coming from the West, it was very promising to get sailable wave-conditions though.

Day 2: Really gusty and very strong winds on the outside made the sail-decision quite hard. The sail should be big enough to get out over the occasionally mast-high waves, but it shouldn´t be that big for outside or riding the waves. Although the wind dropped the competition went on. After about 5 hours of waiting till the guys finished 2 rounds, the first girl-heat was up. The 2 girls Claudia Vogt (AUT-23) and Diane Geldof (H-14) went out. It was the last heat that counted. With the first heat of the guys again after that, the judges decided the wind got too light … a bit too late for the first girls. The strong current took them to underneath the competition area. The other girls didn´t get a chance to sail (luckily in these hard conditions). This only heat of the girls should be resailed, but somehow they weren´t allowed to do it. The decision by the judges about who was the right girl to advance was quite controversial.

Day 3&4: Early in the morning everyone was hoping the wind would pick up in San Andres again, which was unluckily not the case. The wind in Vargas kept changing into all directions, picking up a little and dying totally. The decision about the girls was still not thought over.

Day 5&6: The decision about the first girls-heat was made - it shouldn´t be resailed. Those were two unlucky days since they started with nice waves, but too little wind. When the wind picked up, high tide came in and we only had a shorebreak to ride. Finally when the waves got ok again, the wind dropped again. The girls didn´t get to sail anymore and the first heat that was sailed didn´t count… real bad luck!"
Unfortunately the first competition of the year was not blessed with suitable conditions. Althought the boys sailed a couple of heats, Vargas saw 16 (male) winners in the end.
