Daida Ruano Moreno wins in Pozo, Gran Canaria
Report by Claudia Rankel

The first day in Pozo was a windy one. Unlucky Iballa Ruano-Moreno (E-63) got hurt in the warm-up, breaking three toes and dislocating another one. After that the cards were mixed again and nine girls were competing in the discipline freestyle. When it was the girlsī turn, the wind dropped a little, so the small sails were quite controllable.
Doing Freestyle-moves and not landing them counted less than waveriding, so for example the wave-girl Anne-Marie Reichman (H-98) won against the freestyle-queen Colette Guadagnino (V-711). Although pulling off some difficult tricks, Karin Jaggi (Z-14) lost against an outstanding Daida Ruano-Moreno (E-64). So Jaggi and Guadagnino met in the losersī final. The twin that held the Moreno-flag up was against Reichmann. Showing huge forwards as well as clean spocks and plenty of other tricks, it was a pretty clear decision for the Pozo-local. The second day got windier and the conditions were quite hard for doing Freestyle, but the waves were not so big either, so we had the second Freestyle-elimination. Now Reichman was against Jaggi in the loserīs final while Guadagnino had a head-to-head-heat against Ruano-Moreno. Again - after pulling of a big clew-first forward loop - the victory went to the twin.
Day 3 saw a different winner: Jaggi - by landing a spock and some other nice moves - could finally defeat the so far reigning Ruano-Moreno in the even harder winds blowing that day. The loserīs final was dominated by Guadagnino in front of Reichman. The next day some nice waves were finally coming in and after a break when high tide didn't allow any waves to come in, we saw the final with Jaggi against Ruano-Moreno who were both showing great action by doing push-loops and more in the evening. The twin won another time. The loser's final was dominated by Reichman doing really nice waveriding and forwards, defeating Guadagnino. After that day (although 5 days left), the women didn't have a chance to go out and compete anymore because of no or too light winds - quite strange at this time of the year. The first 4 days were really demanding.

Still no wind at Queen of the Lake

"The ladies at last year's Queen"

As much as four world champions, Daida and Iballa Ruano Moreno, Colette Guadagnino and Karin Jaggi have come to Lake Garda, Italy, to fight for the ladies crown at this year's "King/Queen of the Lake". But still no competition. Unluckily, the wind doesn't seem to cooperate in this edition of the Red Bull King of the Lake so far.
In the early afternoon on Saturday, the Ora looked like it would allow us to start a contest and there were some very promising gusts, but it never came to much of anything. The first heats were sent out to warm up, but before they could even get started the wind had died on them again. Even though there was no wind, there was no time to get bored at the Red Bull Surf Village today, with all the music, sun and a skateboard half pipe show. Tomorrows Skipper's meeting was set for 6.30 AM!!!

Starter-List Queen of the Lake
