Fuerte: New windgirls, new moves

"There is a new government in town!" (Brian Talma.) What the "irie man" ment in his flamboyant speech at the closing ceremony of the PWA freestyle worldcup in Fuerteventura, was pretty clear: The young sailors are taking over the tour. And right now this is also happening in the girls fleet. Althought experienced ladies like Karin Jaggi or the Ruano Moreno twins still lead the pack, there is also young, promising new blood.
Girls from Spain, Poland, Austria and Sweden are prepared to rip the next years. Some of them just at the age of 18, some of them pulling off radical stuff like killer loops or spocks.
No doubt: The Spanish girls dominate here in Fuerteventura: Nayra Alonso from Gran Canaria, Silvia Alba from Tarifa or Angela Peral are names that everybody should better keep in mind for the close future. (Find them all here at windgirls.com very soon).

Another big change in the performance on the water is the enourmously fast accellerating progress in freestyle. Moves like Grubbies, high-speed-clew-first-spock-540ies or Daidas one-foot forward loop (!!!) show the way. And watching some of the boys is almost a mind blasting experience: Shove-it into spock, the "shaka" (shove it into flaka) or the air chachoo are a spectacular outlook to whats coming next. By the way: The "air chachoo" could be described as a forward loop with a duck jibe at the highest point of the rotation...

Fuerteventura: Karin Jaggi beats the twins

Houling winds seemed to be just what the doctor ordered for Iballa and Daida Ruano Moreno here on the windsurf island of the Canaries, Fuerteventura. But this calulation has been made without one very excellent sailor on the PWA tour: Freestyle World Champion Karin Jaggi. Karin showed that she can perform in high winds just as well as the twins. Her forward loops are just as high and radical as the twins¨, and her freestyle program, including hi-end moves like clew first spock 540ies, was even more full of variety.
5 days of freestyle action. packed with 3 double eliminations for the girls, saw Karin in front two times, and Daida winning the last and third round. As Karin was close behind Daida then, she could clearly take the overall honors here in Fuerteventura.

overall results Fuerteventura freestyle:
1 JAGGI Karin Z-14
2 RUANO MORENO Daida E-64
3 RUANO MORENO Iballa E-63
4 ALONSO Nayra GC-4
5 EMIG Tanja AUT-0
6 HOELZL Uli AUT-123
7 KATHER Susanne E-102

PWA report last day of the event: Women Go Wild!

The women’s fleet was more radical than it had been all week with an outstanding final. In the build up during the double elimination Uli Hoelzl (F2 / Arrows) nearly pulled off a back loop and vulcaned her way to fifth equal today and sixth overall.

The battle for fourth place overall here was a showdown between Nayra Alonso and Tanja Emig who were on equal points until today. Nayra was on fire landing forward loops all the way to the semi’s where she was very narrowly beaten by Iballa (Mistral / North) in a 3 / 2 split decision with the judges. This left her in fourth today and fourth overall.

Daida Moreno (Mistral / North) opened the finals with a forward loop on the way in then ran aggressively through a killer routine including yet again a back loop, one of very few by either men or women completed in competition here, a huge forward loop and a speedy one handed spock.

This was enough to finally beat Karin Jaggi (F2 / Arrows) who’d dominated the event until now winning the first two rounds. Daida was clearly ecstatic when the results were announced, moving her into second overall here ahead of her sister Iballa Moreno (Mistral / North).

It also was also enough to secure her number one spot in the world rankings, ahead of Karin and Iballa. The Spanish girls from Tarifa and Gran Canaria occupy five of the top six places in the world rankings now.

Fuerteventura: big "windgirls" fleet

It was a wonderful experience for us today to see how the top girls rip here in the freestyle competition. 14 girls make up a strong "windgirls" fleet, stronger than it has been for a long time!!
Almost amazing how Karin Jaggi, reining world champion in freestyle, performed today, including sick moves like planing clew first spocks. No wonder Iballa Ruano Moreno saw no light against her today. We will keep you updated - check also out our newscentre!

PWA report
Unbelievable freestyle performances started today at Sotavento in fifteen knots of wind with the women’s fleet competing first. The famous Moreno twins (Mistral / North) soon found themselves battling against each other in the quarter finals with a sister act that Iballa won, revenging her beating at the last event by Daida. With Daida back in fifth place, Iballa and the amazing local sailor Suzanne Kather, who’d just beaten Spain’s Angela Peral Martinez (JP / Neil Pryde), fought for a place in the finals and rocked the world rankings.

On the other side of the draw, Freestyle World Champion Karin Jaggi (F2 / Arrows) and Austria’s Tanja Emig knocked out Gran Canaria’s Nayra Alonso, Austrian Claudia Vogt (Fanatic / Arrows) and Spain’s Angie Holzschuh in their quarter finals, to find each other fighting for a place in the final.

With a slight drop in the wind, Karin and Iballa comfortably advanced to meet in the showdown after nearly two hours of exhausting freestyle competition.

As the finals started, the winds stepped up a gear and the girls speed through their moves, every bit as good as the men. After an opening blunder, Karin soon landed a perfect one-handed spock right in front of the judges and crowds. Hearing the cheers, she went on to pull off a forward loop, a monkey gybe, body drag, Vulcan and came very close to a flaka and a grubby, convincingly beating Iballa who crashed and burned too many of her normally well polished stunts.

The battle for third saw Susanne and Tanja totally over powered and absolutely exhausted, struggling to keep control of any move after such a long and successful day. Tanja took third place and Susanne fourth, giving them the strength and confidence for tomorrow’s double elimination action.

Pozo: hard'n heavy

Gran Canaria once again proved itself as one of the windiest corners on earth. Day 1 of the PWA wave and freestyle Grand Slam on the rough shores of Pozo saw a wave final which was a close run affair with local twins Daida and Iballa Ruano Moreno playing for pole position in the opening round. PWA report:
"Despite some massive forward loops and tweaked table tops from Iballa, Daida managed to clinch victory due to her more aggressive wave riding, which included a one handed aerial in the dying seconds of the final."

Besides that, Daidas wildcard for the men's competition did not pay off this time - she lost both heats.

Contrary to the wave discipline, Iballa Moreno (Mistral, North) beat her sister Daida (Mistral, North) in the semis of the freestyle competition and then went on to beat reigning freestyle world champion Karin Jaggi in the final. "The key heat between the sisters all boiled down to a matter of consistency, both twins nailed forward loops and some impressive jumps but Iballa managed to gain the advantage by landing her flat water tricks. The final was also a close run affair but Jaggi failed to land two attempted grubbies which cost her dearly and left the door wide open for Moreno to capitalize and take victory.

2 days later in the double elimination Daida Moreno (Mistral, North) fought her way courageously back through to the final defeating Claudia Rankel (Starboard), Anne Marie Reichman (Naish), Nayra Alonso and Karin Jaggi (F2, Arrows) on the way. With moves such as clew first spocks, huge push loops and flakas, Daida Moreno was certainly in impressive form this afternoon and despite a concerted fight from her sister Iballa in both finals the judges were clear in their decision that Daida had won."

wave: "Finally on the last day of the event the women’s competition boiled down to a major battle between Karin Jaggi and Daida Moreno. Jaggi stormed her way through the losers bracket by defeating Anne Marie Reichman (Naish) and Iballa Moreno (Mistral, North) for her deserved slot in the final. Moreno seemed to struggle in the first final and crashed heavily on several of her aerial moves. Jaggi meanwhile sailed a smart heat and racked up the points with a superb display of high jumps and aggressive wave rides. When the judges gave the decision to Jaggi, it meant it was all down to the last heat of the day to decide the ladies winner. This time around Moreno held her nerve and managed to link together a high scoring heat, action packed with push loops, table tops, one handed back loops and stalled forwards. Jaggi fought back hard landing a monster push loop but in the end Moreno’s local knowledge and mastery of her home spot here in Pozo proved enough to give her the victory.

Daidas win in the waves means that she has cleaned up here in Gran Canaria winning both disciplines in convincing style. Her sister Iballa has also had a successful event after finishing second in freestyle and third overall in waves. Karin Jaggi has also sailed exceptionally this week taking second overall in waves and third in the freestyle."

In the men's competition Vidar Jensen (wave) and Ricardo Campello (freestyle) took the honors in souvereign manner.

DAIDA MORENO (Mistral, North):
"In the first final I could not hold on to my sail and did not really land any of my jumps. After the heat I rigged the sail better and felt a lot more comfortable. I was more relaxed and used the whole ten minutes of the heat. I sailed my best and am really happy about the result."

KARIN JAGGI (F2, Arrows):
"It was super, super mega windy. I was maxed out on a 2.8m. It was hard to wave ride with the small sail because I am not really used to it. In a way I love contests because I would never normally go as high in training. "

FREESTYLE RESULTS:

1. DAIDA MORENO (Mistral, North)
2. IBALLA MORENO (Mistral, North)
3. KARIN JAGGI (F2, Arrows)
4. NAYRA ALONSO

WAVE RESULTS:

1. DAIDA MORENO (Mistral, North)
2. KARIN JAGGI (F2, Arrows)
3. IBALLA MORENO (Mistral, North)
4. ANNE MARIE REICHMAN (Naish)
