But also windsurfing history was made, when Nikos KAKLAMANAKIS (GRE), 1996 Olympic Gold Medallist was the torchbearer who lit the cauldron at the Olympic stadium during the opening ceremony of the 28th Olympic Games. This is probably the first time that such an honour has been bestowed upon any sailor let alone a windsurfer. quotes: Faustine MERRET (FRA) – gold medallist How did you feel prior to today’s race: “I had a lot of feeling from the beginning. After the first three races I had separated myself from the rest. Last night I slept very well, got here, and just treated it like another race. I watched the men’s race, then there was a little time before the women’s race and that was it.” On recent improvement in performance: “This year I have really concentrated on the details and questioned myself after each race. I think that is why I came out at the top.” On China’s performance: “I am really surprised about Jian YIN’s performance this week and have been watching for two years and noticed that she has become increasingly more and more dangerous. To finish with the silver is a really big step.” On Alessandra’s result: “I never imagined Alessandra would finish seventh today.” On the gold: “It’s hard to say, I really enjoyed the race. I have enormous pride in winning a medal. I hope it will be an encouragement to others. I am really happy. It is hard to realise this has happened.” Alessandra SENSINI (ITA) – bronze medallist On today’s performance: “I had a bad start and had a few girls over me, one of whom was OCS. I was well back and had to do two tacks to get out of the start and knew it would be really hard to catch up. In the second half, I went right and didn’t get the shift. The start for sure was really bad and then I was on the wrong side – and it was very difficult to get back.” On being one of the oldest in the fleet, at 34 years old: “This makes me proud to think that I have won a medal for the “old guard”! Seriously, this competition has been very light wind and pumping has played a big factor. On the whole I am pleased.” Jian YIN (CHN) – silver medallist On windsurfing in China:”China has made a lot of progress over the past two years and concentrated our efforts. The medal is fulfilling a dream for all watersports in China and I am very proud of it. On Faustine’s performance: “Faustine has been very steady and only had one bad race. She deserves the gold medal.” posted by editors at 2:20 AM |
