Cape Cod Wahine Weekend West Dennis MA- The Cape Cod Wahines, a women’s windsurfing group, hosted an instructional clinic this past weekend at beautiful West Dennis Beach. West Dennis Beach is one of the East Coast’s most famous windsurfing site with super on shore winds and scenic views drawing sailors from as far as Canada and the West Coast. The Cape Cod Wahines, formed last year by co-chairperson Kay Slater, is a grassroots organization dedicated to wind, wave, and kitesurfing for women of all ages. Slater recruited other windsurfing woman to help promote this mostly male dominated board sport. Co-chairpersons and fellow Cape Cod windsurfers Desiree Moyer, Maria Depasquale, and Liz Patton brainstormed with Slater on how to best organize their efforts to provide instructional clinics, on-line forums, child care networks, social interaction and support for other windsurfing women. This fledgling group quickly identified their individual talents and skills as recruiters, graphic and web designers, and overall networking to host a women’s windsurfing clinic. The natural choice for an instructor was Petra Kanz as seasoned instructor having done many clinics on Cape Cod in the past. She was assisted by instructors, Dottie, Liz Glines, and Elizabeth Fitzgerald. The Cape Cod Wahine Weekend was blessed with fair weather. Despite light offshore winds and a few threatening clouds, the women were undaunted in their efforts to enjoy the camaraderie and support. Windsurfers with minimal skill levels to intermediate levels from all over Massachusetts convened this past weekend to learn how to rig, beach start, tack, jibe, and self-rescue. Twenty one excited students arrived 8am on Saturday and Sunday with vintage gear, borrowed gear, rented gear, and even new gear. Special guest, Jeff Henderson, sail designer of Hot Sails Maui demonstrated proper sail rigging technique on the first sail designed specifically for women. Henderson designed the Diva sail specifically for women who would benefit from a lighter, more manageable rig, thus removing one more barrier that women often encounter when participating in the sport.
