SPEEEEED: Nigeria-Walvisbay records/ Karin Jaggi ISA World Champion/ Masters of Speed! ![]() 1. Nigeria/Walvis Bay Speed Week 2005: 6 new world speed sailing and 23 national records. In less than a week Namibia has become firmly entrenched as a world class speed sailing venue. Current outright world speed record holder for the 500m and Nautical mile – Finian Maynard commented “Walvis is the Premier Nautical mile strip in the world”. Valerie Ghibaudo of France broke the womans outright nautical mile record to 33.68 knots (62 km/h). In some exciting racing, Finian Maynard of the British Virgin Islands crushed Bjorn Dunkerbeck’s outright nautical mile record of 34 knots to 39.97 knots (74 km/h) in 25 to 30 knots of wind. In the Ladies 500m event, Valerie Ghibaudo beat Karin Jaggi (World record holder 41.25 knots) in the last day of exciting racing. Third is Maike Kallenborn of Netherlands. Winning the windsurfing 500 m event is Bjorn Dunkerbeck taking 5 out of 6 heats, followed by Fininan Maynard and Antoine Albeau from France. The woman production title was snatched away by Christine Pihan of Germany from Valerie Ghibaudo of France. Aurelia Herpin of France smashed the world record for the 500m course from 33 knots to 35.20 knots (60 km/h), unfortunately the only lady racing so winning the 500m event for Ladies. 2. The 2005 ISA Speedsurfing World Champions therefore are Karin Jaggi (F2) and Bjorn Dunckerbeck (T1, North),Andorra. The IFCA Production Speedsurfing World Champions are Christine Pihan (F2, Neil Pryde), Germany and Alain de Gendt (F2, North), Belgium. More than 120 competitors, representing 24 nations from 5 continents fought for the titles in 4 divisions. www.speedsurfing.org 3. Duel on the Canal After two years of individual world record attempts, multiple world champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck (North Sails) and current world record holder Finian Maynard (F2/ Naish Sails) will finally clash for the coveted sailing barrier of 50-knots at the worlds premier speedsailing location in Saintes Maries de la Mer, France. The event is slated to run from October 26th until December 20th 2005, two WSSRC periods in the hope of capturing the perfect day to extend windsurfings current hold on the outright world record which currently stands at 48.70-knots or 91km/h, an average speed over 500 meters. Other notable sailors in attendance include womens 2004 PWA racing champion Allison Shreeve (F2/ Neil Pryde), who is aiming to surpass Karin Jaggis (F2) 41.25-knot world record (www.mastersofspeed.com , British record holder Dave White (Tabou/ Severne, 44.03) and French record holder David Garrel (F2/ North Sails, 45.51). Raceboard World Championship Carmen Vaz takes the Raceboard Women's Championship title. Bryony Shaw (GBR) and Faustine Merret (FRA) kept hold of their second and third places.
