Red Bull Strom Chase Highlights

October 31st and November 1st 2006: Heavy storm with up to 157 km/h howled over Germany and most parts of Northern Europe. 23 Red Bull Storm Chasers in 9 countries -- among them only two girls -- were on their way to chase the biggest storm of the year!

12 Beaufort, sun, heavy rain and hail, dark clouds. Up to 17 meter high waves on open sea, the highest max ever measured in the North Sea. Reports of the heaviest storm since fifteen years. Ferry transport to Norderney was closed, Oil Platforms floated „anchorless“ – these are the conditions the Red Bull Storm chasers in all participating countries were waiting for – they all had one goal: to chase it! And they did! This spectacular and unique windsurf action was documented by professional camerateams.

Steffi Wahl, Baltic Sea

Around noon the storm hit the Baltic Sea West (Howacht Bay) with full force up to 12bft! Temperature dropped to 4 degrees. Storm Chase team Steffi Wahl and Matze Bade had a tough and freezing fight with the nature. Steffi: „I´ve never expected anything like this up here at the Baltic sea! I sailed my smallest sail but the wind was so heavy, sometimes it was impossible to jump. When I jumped I flew so far away, I worried where I would catch ground again.”

Emma Johansson, Sweden

Emma about the day: "31 October was the day for Redbull Stormchase. I drove to Malmo the day before to be closer to the spot that the team choose, Vilsharad, close to Halmstad. The forecast looked best for my homespot, Gronhogen on Oland, but because some of the cameramen were unavailable in the afternoon we had to be on the west coast of Sweden. I can understand that, it was with short notice this day was chosen, but still annoying cause it was more wind at home and for the whole day. But it was fun to sail at a new spot and will for sure go back there again. I was out on a 4.1 Icon and a 75 allwave which was perfect for these conditions, not really storm. The water was cold so I couldn’t feel my toes after a while which made everything more difficult. I have to admit that I wasn’t in my best shape either, haven’t been able to sail so much lately. But I had fun and did the best at the moment (but I can do better :)"
