Bonaire is fast becoming one of the favorite Caribbean windsurf destinations. The island has a lovely bay called Lac where the winds blow a nice steady onshore. The water is gin clear and the sand, brown sugar fine. It’s a mecca for windsurfers to train during their winter hiatus. It is the winter playground for an international crowd. American and Euro sailors come to sail. Most of all some of the hippest and hottest pros live and train on this windy paradise.

KLM and Arke Fly have non stop flights from Amsterdam. Air Jamaica flies from the US every Sat. Continental has non stops from Newark and Houston every weekend and AA flies daily. Those coming in from South America can fly from Caracas or Quito easily. Gear tariffs can be high on KLM so check ahead. If you prefer to rent gear, two shops on site have an annual shipment of brand spanking new gear. Accommodations are cheap starting at 55.00 USD a night for two. Trucks are 180.00 USD a week plus tax and optional insurance. If you follow the advice of ex patriot windsurf expert and travel agent, Ann Phelan, you can have a great meal for around 10-13.00 USD. She knows where to buy the freshest fish, lovely mangoes and cheap eats all around.

Windsurfing is the islands unofficial national sport. Trash cans, non windsurfer cars and light poles have stickers from events around the world, Starboard Tiki man symbols and more. There is a windsurf even each month and since the early 2000s, 3 pro events have hit the shores of Bonaire. Recently Bonaire has hosted 2 pro kid events and will soon host the 3rd Annual Pro Kid Event where over 150 kids are expected to attend.

The winds blow best from end of Nov. until mid July. During hurricane season the winds die and the island heats up so best avoid Aug. – Nov. For more information email ann@bonairecaribbean.com
