Fortaleza Race Grand Prix, 12th to 19th September

Last Minute Carneval

The racing discipline was in trouble. Until Brazil no racing for the women could be held, even the Canarian tour saw not enough competitors willing to race. In Paros, Greece local heroine Tony Frey even started in the men's fleet... (see photo).

For the 70 000-dollar-race-event in Fortaleza the scenery changed. In the last days before the event it became clear: The first racing of the year would take part in the land of samba and the carneval.

REPORT:

It was World Champion Karin Jaggi (Z-14) who stamped her authority on race 1 in the women's fleet. Lucienne Ernst (H-444) settled comfortably into second, ahead of rising star Colette Guadagnino (V-711) from Venezuela. A strong Brazilian challenge came from Flavia Leite (BR-317) in fourth.

It was once again all change at the top for the women in race 2. Ernst led from the start to finish first ahead of Jaggi who was unable to do any damage to the Dutch girls lead. With Guadagnino reliably in third it was down to the local girls to fight it out for fourth with Valeria Matuck (BR-704) taking the honours from Daniella Monteiro (BR-94) in fifth.

Race 3 was almost a repeat performance, apart from Renata Fuzetti (BRA-157) moving up to fourth, and proved once again that Ernst is a force to be reckoned with on the race course.

In race 4 it was the reigning World Champion who once again claimed excellence. As always Guadagnino kept up the pressure and forbade the leaders having any time to relax.

Race 5 saw total domination from Ernst during the first upwind leg with a close battle for second going on behind her between Jaggi and Guadagnino. Just into the downwind section, Jaggi fell conceding second to the Venezuelan who went on to catch Ernst by the end of the downwind section. As they began the second upwind leg, they were neck and neck with Guadagnino occasionally edging ahead, pushed on by a glimpse of victory. Fortunately for Ernst it was not to be as the tip Guadagnino's rig collapsed costing her valuable speed and allowing Jaggi the chance she needed to catch up and recover her second position.

With the damage to her equipment un-repairable for the last race Guadagnino was forced to sit it out on the beach, leaving the way clear for Brazilian Valeria Matuck to take third with an excellent performance behind Jaggi who was once again simply unable to catch Holland's finest.

The day before the PWA-worldcup started, Colette has had more luck: She won a long distance race in front of Karin Jaggi...

In the next eliminations the reigning world champion Karin Jaggi performed better and better, leaving Ernst behind. Jaggi won the eliminations 7 and 9 - 12!! And Ernst took the 6th and the 8th elimination.

Race 13: The women's contest had come right down to the wire and it was a case of winner takes all in the battle between Jaggi and Ernst. Unfortunately for Holland's finest, Jaggi, who confessed to being exceptionally nervous about the race, did not falter at the final fence and dominated from the start refusing to give Ernst the slightest look in.

Guadagnino, despite leading Ernst for the majority of the race, slipped back into her regular third slot ahead of Brazil's Matuck who maintained her normal fourth.

Karin Jaggi:

"It was pretty interesting to see how we were gonna do after one year with no racing and to be honest I haven't really been training a lot because I've been concentrating on other disciplines. I didn't really start very good because I wasn't so used to my equipment and didn't feel comfortable and I made a couple of big mistakes at the beginning and it looked like Lucienne would be pretty much ahead. But then I started catching up slowly, got really fit, got the feeling back like I used to have last year and it started working out. I was probably never as nervous before as I was today, I was awake at seven and the skippers meeting was not until twelve and that was a pretty long time, but once I got to the beach and saw it was really windy, I knew I had a very good chance to win. I tried the equipment, went out to the race and as soon as we got our starting signal I was pretty confident that I would win and I wasn't making too many mistakes so I could clear my head and once I was ahead I was alright."
